Florida State University is honoring members of its new class of tenured faculty through the annual Celebration of Newly Tenured Faculty and Showcase of the Library Endowment Book Collection.

This annual initiative honored the 54 newly-tenured faculty—the most awarded during any academic year at FSU to date—and their significant achievements by allowing each recipient to hand-select an item for FSU Libraries and its collections in a subject area of their choosing.

Recruiting and retaining exceptional faculty is essential to maintaining the university’s reputation as a preeminent institution of higher learning, and Florida State is able to uphold this high standard of teaching excellence thanks to the generosity of FSU donors. By offering distinguished professorships funded by FSU supporters, the university is able to entice talented scholars to campus or keep them at Florida State teaching our students.

Three members of this year’s new tenured faculty also received distinguished professorships during their time at FSU:

  • Christopher Holmes, Werner A. and Shirley B. Baum Assistant Professor, Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science
  • Evan Thomas Jones, Elbert B. Shelfer Jr. and Lucille P. Shelfer Professorship in Music, College of Music
  • Justin Sevier, Charles W. Ehrhardt Professor of Litigation, College of Law

The materials they selected include “Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words” by Randall Martin; “Symphony No. 2”, a composition by Ernő Dohnányi; and “On the Witness Stand: Essays on Psychology and Crime” by Hugo Münsterberg.

Endowed professorship and chair positions provide further support for faculty development, such as research and travel, while supporting prominent faculty members whose presence within our colleges and units can be transformational.
