Roxanne Hughes joined the faculty of Florida State University in 2012 as research faculty at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab), where she is director of the Center for Integrating Research and Learning. In 2024, she became an associate professor of science education in the Anne’s College of Education, Health and Human Sciences. As a faculty member at FSU, she has established herself as a strong partner in shared governance. Hughes is committed to bridging silos across departments to help faculty, including specialized faculty, thrive. In her role at FSU and the MagLab, she has demonstrated her commitment to problem solving and collaboration to address issues at the student, faculty and staff levels. Her involvement at FSU has included serving on the FSU Research Strategic Planning Committee (ASPIRE), the FSU Faculty Senate Steering Committee and the FSU Strategic Planning Committee. Her experience with these committees and leadership roles demonstrates her ability to work with faculty and other leaders and advance policies on a department, university and national level.

In terms of research, Hughes has extensive experience in STEM teaching and informal STEM education, with a research focus on STEM identity — one’s sense of belonging and potential success within a chosen STEM field. Her work has influenced policies and programs that engage students across K-12 and higher education in STEM, helping them envision successful futures in these fields. Hughes’ nationally recognized research has informed strategies for educators and role models to create supportive environments for young people in STEM. In recognition of her contributions, Hughes was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Hughes has also served in leadership and advisory roles, including as a chair of the American Physical Society’s Forum on Outreach and Engaging the Public.
