The College of Nursing has been educating nurses in the state of Florida since 1950, and we have a long tradition of educational excellence in nursing. Our longstanding tradition of educational excellence in the areas of Community and Public Health Nursing continues with an emphasis on the care of vulnerable populations. Student nurses continue to gain valuable leadership experiences by participating in the Student Nurses Association and performing outreach to the campus and surrounding communities.

Changing demographics of the population, increasing chronicity and the complexity of our health care system add new levels of information management and knowledge for practice requiring innovative, application based curricula across classroom and clinical learning environments.

To maintain our tradition of educational excellence and keep up with our rapidly changing healthcare environment, we have employed innovative approaches such as evidence-based practice, nursing research and simulation learning to improve student learning, patient safety and knowledge for the discipline.

  • Evidence-based practice and nursing research continue to help define best practices. By incorporating evidence based nursing into our curricula, nursing students will learn and evaluate best practices to meet the needs of their patients across all community health care settings.
  • A state of the science simulation learning center has been created to promote patient during nursing education. In doing so, we remain on the cutting edge of 21st century nursing education and teach using innovative and evidence-based strategies.
  • We remain on the forefront of nursing education with the establishment of our Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program focusing on Health Systems Leadership and Family Nurse Practitioner. The first class has been admitted for fall 2009.
  • The College’s BSN curriculum has been revised and will allow students to participate more fully in summer study abroad opportunities, undergraduate research activities and internships.
